Educating for an uncertain future

When I set out to design a school that would prepare students for an unpredictable future, this was not what I had in mind. Still, the ideas behind Red Bridge and our goals for students are as relevant as ever. Our vision from day one has been for all students to graduate from Red Bridge with a sense of ownership over their learning and their lives – so that no matter what the future looks like, they have the capacity to adapt and flourish. For parents who have recently found themselves tasked with playing the role of part-time teacher, the value of raising self-directed children is likely even more apparent.

A lifelong love of learning

When the structures of school fall away, students are left with the strategies they’ve been taught and the intrinsic motivation they’ve developed to direct their own learning. Many parents are finding out that these skills are not in the traditional school curriculum – but we think they should be! At Red Bridge we know that what students need to be successful while learning from their bedroom or their classroom is a sense of agency. Red Bridge has learning guides that meet one-on-one with students to teach work habits, set goals, and talk about hopes and dreams. Grouping students by autonomy level means that students progress through the school only when they are able to prove they are ready to take more responsibility for their learning. The Red Bridge model provides students with a sense of ownership over their learning and their lives – so that no matter what the future has in store, they have the capacity to adapt and flourish.

A small and nimble school

As a new, small school, our size has turned out to be an advantage. We have capped enrollment at twelve students for the 2020 - 2021 school year. When operating in-person, we will be able to have all of our students in the school space while maintaining a safe distance, and a healthy learning environment.
